Autophon Recordophon

Vor einiger Zeit auf dem Schrottplatz sah ich unter anderem Gerümpel eine Holzkiste.

Some time ago on the scrapyard I saw under a heap of rubbish a wooden box.

Als ich die Klappe öffnete, sah ich etwas etwas Spezielles.

When I opened the lid, I saw something special.

Nun, der Plattenteller mit dem Tonarm war es nicht der mein Interesse weckte. Rechts neben dem Tonarm aber fiel mir gleich der Teller für die Drahtspule auf.

Well, it was not the record tray and the pickup, that raised my interest. It was the tray of the wire bobin to the right of the pickup.

Es war ein Drahtrecorder kombiniert mit einem Grammophon - allerdings schon mit elektrodynamischem Tonabnehmer.

It was a wire recorder combined with a grammophone - already equipped with a electrodynamic pickup.

Es war ein "Recordophon" der Schweizer Firma Autophon.

It was a "Recordophon" of the Swiss company Autophone. 

Das Baujahr dürfte so um 1951 herum gelegen haben.

The year of manufacture must have been around 1951.

Zu dieser Zeit gab es mehrere Hersteller von Drahtrecordern. 

Sehr bekannt waren die Geräte der amerikanischen Firma Webster (die man auf manchen alten Filmaufnahmen der Nürnberger Prozesse sehen kann) und die deutsche Firma Schaub-Lorenz. Ein ganz spezieller, partabler Drahtrecorder war das Minifon der Hamburger Firma Protona, über das ich in einem anderen Post in Kürze berichten werde.

At that time several producers of wire recorders existed.

Well known were recorders of the American company Webster (which can be seen in some historical movies of the Nürnberg trials) and the German company Schaub-Lorenz. A very special portable wirerecorder was the Minifon of the Hamburg company Protona, about which I will report in one of the next posts.

Dieses historisch interessante Gerät war in einem bedauernswerten Zustand: 

Das Gehäuse war gebrochen und durchnässt, die Kabel der Elektronik von Tieren angefressen, der Plattentellerbezug zerrissen und die Mechanik ölverschmiert.

This historically interesting device war in a pitiable state: The cabinet was broken an wet, the cabling was partly torn and fretted, the cover of the record tray was torn and the mechanics was smudged with oil.  

Bei genauerer Prüfung zeigten sich noch zwei weitere, heikle Defekte.

More detailed investigation showed two more precarious defects.

Die sogenannte "Tänzer-Rolle" aus Hartgummi, die sich zwischen Antrieb und Plattenteller klemmt und diesen antreibt, war mehr fünfeckig als rund (siehe Pfeil im folgenden Bild).

Dadurch rumpelte der Plattenspieler wie ein Auto, dass durch Schlaglöcher fährt.

The so called dancer roll, made of hard rubber, which is clamped between the drive shaft and the record tray in order to drive the tray, was a pentagon rather than a circle.

Therefore the player rumbled like a car on a gravel road.

Ausserdem zeigten Widerstandsmessungen am Tonkopf des Drahtrecorders, dass die Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule defekt war.

Furthermore resistance measurements at the recording head of the wire recorder showed that die read-/write-coil was defekt. 

Uijuijui.

Einen Tonkopf hatte ich noch nie in meinem Leben geöffnet, geschweige denn repariert.

Ein Ersatz aus Altbeständen von Sammlern und Restaurateuren war auch nicht zu erwarten, da dieses Schweizer Recordophon relativ selten ist und einen rechteckigen Tonkopf besitzt, während die anderen, verbreiteteren Geräte von Webster und Schaub runde Tonköpfe hatten.

I never opened up a recording head in my life, nor did I reair one.

A substitute from old stock of collectors and restorers could not be expected since this Swiss Recordophon is relatively rare and has a square recording head whereas the other more widely spread machines of Webster and Schaub had round heads.

Also habe ich erstmal mit den einfacheren Sachen begonnen.

So for the time being I started with some simpler things.

Das Tänzerrad konnte ich ausbauen und den Gummibelag um ca 1mm abdrehen. Das ging auf der Drehbank erstaunlich gut.

 I removed the dancer roll and turned off 1mm on the lathe. This worked astonishingly well.

Auch der Plattentellerbelag liess sich entfernen und durch neuen Filz ersetzen. 

Also the cover of the record tray yould be removed and replaced by a new felt cover.

Die übrige Mechanik war schnell gereinigt und soweit unversehrt. Der Motor lief noch einwandfrei.

The rest of the mechanic was readily cleaned and intact. The motor still worked fine.

Von einem Sammlerkollegen bekam ich eine etwas verbogene Drahtspule, die ich richten konnte.

From a collector friend I received a slightly bent bobin with wire on it and could straighten it.

Damit war dieser Teil schon wieder funktionsfähig und präsentabel:

Dann habe ich mir die Elektronik  vorgenommen. 

Sie dient als Aufnahme-/Wiedergabeverstärker für den Drahtrecorder. Aufnahmen sind möglich von Mikrophon, Platte und Radio. Zur Wiedergabe von Platte oder Drahtrecorder wurde das Ausgangssignal des Verstärkers in den Grammophoneingang eines Radios gespeist.

Then I went for the electronics.

It has the function of a record/playback amplifier for the wire recorder. Recordings are possible from microphone, record and radio. For playback of records or wire recordings the output signal of the amplifier was fed into the pickup jack of a radio receiver.

Die Röhren waren glücklicherweise intakt, insbesondere die mittlerweile seltene und daher teure EM4, das magische Auge, mit dessen Hilfe man die Aufnahmen aussteuert.

The tubes fortunately were ok, especially the meanwhile rare and expensive EM4, the magic eye, which helps to control the recordings.

Ansonsten mussten Kondensatoren erneuert, abgerissene und angefressene Kabel geflickt und Rost entfernt werden - das Übliche halt.

Apart from that I had to renew capacitors, mend torn and animal-bitten cables and remove rust und dirt - the usual procedure. 

Nur testen konnte ich die Elektronik nur rudimentär, da der Tonkopf dabei eine zentrale Rolle spielt.

Also musste ich mich jetzt endlich an diese heikle Aufgabe machen.

Ich musste die Nieten entfernen um ihn zu öffnen.

However I could test the electronics only rudimentary, since the recording head plays a central role in the electronics.

So now I had to finally attack this delicate work.

I had to remove the rivets to open it.

Die Spulen auf dem Eisenkern im Inneren waren leider mit Kunstharz vergossen, der auf dem Bild schon teilweise entfernt ist.

Ich hatte die schwache Hoffnung, dass der dünne Draht der Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule vielleicht nur am äusseren Ende abgerissen sein könnte, und habe daher eine Weile an dem Kunstharz herumgekratzt und das Ende gesucht. 

Es war aber hoffnungslos.

The coils on the iron core unfortunately were molded in resin, which is already partly removed on the foto.
I had the week hope that the thin wire of the record/playback-coil might only be torn at its outer end. Therefore I scratched a while in the resin searching for the loose end.

But it was hopeless.

Also gab es nur eine Möglichkeit, den Tonkopf zu retten: 

Die Spulen mussten so vorsichtig zerstückelt werden, dass man die Drahtstärke und die Zahl der Windungen ermitteln konnte, denn diese Produktionsdetails sind heute nicht mehr verfügbar.

So there was only one possibility to save the recording head: I had to fragment them carefully so that I could retain the diameter of the wire and the number of turns, because these production details were no longer available.

Das gelang einigermassen. Insbesondere wurde damit klar, dass ich auf den winzigen Spulenkörper der Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule ca 2000 Windungen Kupferlackdraht mit einem Durchmesser von 0,1mm würde aufbringen müssen.

This worked fairly well. In particular it became clear that I would have to wind 2000 turns of 0,1mm enameled copper wire onto this tiny coil body.

Ausserdem wollte ich die Spulenkörper erhalten, denn die sind so klein, dass ich sie nicht selbst herstellen konnte. Die Löcher darin sind rechteckig und haben die Masse 0,8mm x 3,5mm. Das sind natürlich immer noch riesige Dimensionen verglichen mit der Grösse des Tonkopfes moderner Kassettenrecorder, aber wie dem auch sei, ich hatte keine Idee, wie ich sie hätte herstellen können.

Furthermore I wanted to preserve the coil bodies because they were so small that I would not be able to remake them in my shop.

The holes in them were square and had the dimensions 0,8mm x 3,5mm. Of course this is still huge compared to recording heads of modern cassette recorders, but anyhow, I did'nt have an idea how to make them. 

Schliesslich hatte ich die Spulen freigelegt und konnte sie vom Eisenkern abziehen.

Sie waren aber jetzt ziemlich ramponiert.

Finally I excavated the coils and could pull them off the iron core.

But now they were fairly battered.

Zumindest den grossen Spulenkörper musste ich wieder instandsetzen.

Mit 0,8mm dünnem Pertinax und Epoxidkleber gelang das erstaunlich gut.

At least the larger coil body hat to be restored. Using 0,8mm Pertinax and epoxy resin this worked astonishingly well.

Nun musste ich noch eine Halterung für diesen Spulenkörper bauen, damit ich ihn zum Wickeln der 2000 Windungen auf der Drehbank spannen  konnte:

Now I had to build a mount for this body, so that I could clamp it on the lathe for winding the 2000 turns.

Aber dann ging alles ganz schnell und leicht.

But then everything went fast and easy.

Die Spulen wurden gewickelt, montiert und verdrahtet:

Vorsichtshalber habe ich den Tonkopf mit Schrauben verschlossen und NICHT vergossen.

As a precaution I locked the head with screws instead of rivets and I did NOT seal it.

Damit konnte ich den Drahtrecorder testen und in Betrieb nehmen, aber das wird Gegenstand des nächsten Post sein.

So now I could test the wire recorder and put it in operation.
