Wo ich gerade beim Thema Lautsprecher war...

Dieses Teil habe ich vor einem Jahr in der Schweiz ersteigert.

By the way - loudspeaker...

I bought this piece in an auction in Switzerland last year.

Für 10 CHF.

Sieht nicht mehr so gut aus, oder?

For 10 CHF.

Doesn't look too good any more, doesn't it?

Aber irgendwie schien mir das interessant.

Als ich es zu Hause auspackte,...

But somehow I found it interesting.

When I unpacked it at home...

...hatte ich nur noch Fragmente in der Hand.

... I only held fragments in my hands.

Aber das Chassis sah nicht schlecht aus.

But the Chassis didn't look bad.

Dann begann die immer wieder spannende Suche nach der Herkunft.

Was ist das eigentlich für ein Ding?

An vier Stellen auf dem Chassis waren Schriften zu erkennen:

What kind of thing do I have here?

There were four places on the chassis showing inscriptions.

Die 2004 ist sicher nicht die Jahreszahl - daher erst einmal nichtssagend.

8232 sagte mir auch nichts.

Das dritte konnte ich nicht entziffern.

Auf dem ersten Bild konnte ich mit viel Phantasie entziffern:

The figure 2004 certainly is not the year - so for the time beeing it meant nothing to me.

8232 also didn't give a clue.

The third picture I couldn't decipher.

On the first picture - with some imagination - I read:

MF? Compa??

Anvers Bel???

Auf einem anderen Exemplar sieht der Schriftzug (Bi-Cone = Doppelkegel) so aus:

On a picture in Radiomuseum.org I found a clearer inscription of the type Bi-Cone:

Now I could also recognize it on my chassis.

Das Prinzip ist noch zwei Lautsprechergenerationen älter als das des Majestic G-5 von Grigsby-Grunow.

The technical principle is even two speaker generations older than that of the Majestic G-5 of Grigsby-Grunow.

Es handelt sich um einen sogenannten magnetischen Lautsprecher.

Das Prinzip ist in der folgenden Skizze aus dem Buch "Radios von Gestern" von Ernst Erb sehr schön dargestellt.

It is a so called magnetic speaker. The principle is nicely described in the following scetch taken from the book "Radios von Gestern" von Ernst Erb.

Auf dem folgenden Foto meines Bi-Cone sieht man die auf den Betrachter weisende Stange, die dann in der vorderen Spitze des Konus festgeschraubt wird. Diese Stange überträgt die Schwingungen der Zunge Z auf den Konus. Die Zunge Z schwingt zwischen den Polen eines Hufeisenmagnets, wenn durch die Spule Sp der "Musikstrom" fliesst.

On the following foto of my Bi-Cone you can see the bar pointing

towards the viewer which is then fixed to the tip of the front cone.

This bar transmits the vibrations of tong Z to the cone. Tong Z swings between the poles of a magnet when the voice current flows through coil Sp.

Das Chassis und der Antrieb, waren glücklicherweise völlig in Ordnung.

The Chassis and the drive, fortunately were completely okay.

Aber der Konus...

Er musste komplett erneuert werden.

But the cone...

It had to be replaced completely.

Das ist übrigens etwas, was auch bei modernen Lautsprechern nicht unüblich ist. Es gibt Firmen, die auf die Erneuerung von Lautsprechermembranen spezialisiert sind, und wenn der Lautsprecher teuer war, lohnt sich dass sogar...

This by the way ist something which is not unusual for modern speakers either. There are companies specialized on the renewal of Speaker membranes, and if the Speaker has been expensive, it's worth it...

Aber zurück zum Bi-Cone.

But back to the Bi-Cone.

Aus den Fragmenten habe ich versucht, die Abmessungen zu rekonstruieren. Das war zum Teil kein Problem. Mit dem Kegelwinkel des vorderen und hinteren Kegels hatte ich aber so meine Probleme. Waren diese Winkel nun gleich oder nicht?

I tried to reconstruct the dimensions of the cone from the fragments. This was easy but with the angles of the front cone and the rear cone I had some problems. Were Ttese angles identical or not?

Vorversuche mit billigem Packpapier haben mich dann darauf gebracht wie es gewesen sein muss: Nur wenn die beiden Kegelwinkel gleich sind, kann man den Doppelkegel einfach herstellen. Nur dann kann man nämlich - wie in der folgenden Skizze gezeigt - den hinteren Kegel so umstülpen dass er sich voll an den vorderen Kegel anschmiegt. Dann kann man die beiden an den Rändern verkleben und den Hinteren anschliessend wieder umstülpen.

Experiments with cheap cardboard brought me to the right conclusion: Only if the two cone angles are identical, it is easy to manufacture the Bi-Cone. As shown in the following sketch only then the rear cone can be inverted and is then completely aligned with the front cone. Then it is easy to glue the two cones together at the rim and afterwards to reinvert the rear cone getting the final Bi-Cone.

Wenn die Kegelwinkel ungleich sind, ist diese Verklebung sehr kompliziert.

If the cone angles are different, the bonding of the two cones is much more difficult.

So wurde es dann also gemacht.

Die Abwickung wurd auf 0,3mm braunen Zeichenkarton aufgezeichnet und ausgeschnitten. Für die Verklebung der Kegelkante habe ich Buchbinderleim Planatol genommen. Der bleibt elastisch, ist kurzzeitig korrigierbar aber auch schnell fest. Die beiden Kegel wurden am Rand dann mit dem braunem Papierklebeband verklebt, das man anfeuchten musste, wie früher die Briefmarken.

Das ging sehr gut.

So it was done.

The geometrical shape of the cones was drawn to 0,3mm Brown cardboard and cut. To glue the two ends of these shapes together, I used bookbinder glue (Planatol). It remains elastic, can be corrected a short time and yet glues fast. The two cones then were glued together with an old type of sticky tape which had to be wetted to make it glue - like the old stamps.

This went very well.

Vorher habe ich noch die Banderolen-Verzierung auf den Karton übertragen, und das geht so:

Before that, I transfered the banderoles to the cardboard, and here's how it works:

Man zeichnet das Muster mit einem Zeichenprogramm wie Corel Draw und druckt es auf weisses Papier. Dann legt man das Papier mit der bedruckten Seite auf den Karton. Die Rückseite wird dann mit Aceton befeuchtet (nicht zu viel) und mit einer Rolle an die Pappe angedrückt. Das löst den Toner und überträgt ihn auf die Pappe.

First the pattern is drawn using a drawing software like Corel Draw and the result is printed on white paper. Then the paper is placed printed side down on the cardboard. The backside is then wetted with acetone (not too much) and pressed with a roller onto the cardboard. This relieves the toner from the white paper and transfers it to the cardboard.

Um den Konus unempfindlich gegen Feuchtigkeit zu machen, habe ich ihn mit Plastik70 eingesprüht. Das ist ein transparenter Lack, der sich in der Elektronik seit Jahrzehnten bewährt hat.

To make the cone unsensitive to moisture, I sprayed it with Plastik70, a transparent varnish which is proven in electronics since decades.

Im nächsten Schritt wurde mit Epoxy-Kleber der Aluflansch, mit dem der Konus am Chassis befestigt wird, und die Alu-Fassung für die Antriebsstange in der Kegelspitze aufgeklebt.

In the next step, the flange for fixing the cone to the chassis and the fixture for the bar in the cone tip were glued to the cardboard with epoxy resin.
