Bandages for broken Plastic Parts

Bei der Restauration älterer Geräte stösst man mitunter auf kaputte Kunststoffteile. Durch Alterung oder einfach Überlastung können hochbelastete Stelle wie z.B. Lagerbüchsen einreissen.

When restoring old devices, you are occasionally confronted with broken plastic parts. Due to ageing or overstressing highly stressed regions like bushings can tear.

Wenn möglich, ersetze ich das ganze Kunststoffteil. Manchmal aber sind die Kunststoffteile so komplex geformt, dass ein Nachbau zu kompliziert ist. Wenn ein Ersatzteil nicht mehr erhältlich oder zu teuer ist, ist guter Rat teuer.

If possible, I usually replace the whole plastic part. Sometimes however these parts have such a complex form that it is too complicated to rebuild them. If spare parts are no longer available or too expensive, it's hard to know what to do.  

Oft ist es dann aber möglich, die belasteten Teile mit Metallteilen - ich verwende meist Messing - so zu bandagieren, dass sie wieder stabil sind und ein weiteres Einreissen vermieden wird.

Der Aufwand ist meist relativ gering.

Often however it is possible, to bandage the most stressed regions with metal parts - I usually use brass - in order to make them stable again and to prevent them from tearing further. The effort frquently is fairly small.

Wenn die Bandagen stramm passend gemacht werden, braucht man noch nicht mal Kleber.

If the bandages are made to fit snugly, not even glue is needed.

Diese Nylon-Ritzel waren gerissen. Man hätte sie vielleicht noch beschaffen können. Schneller und billiger ging es aber mittels Bandagen. Einfach aufgepresst und fertig - und es sieht auch noch hübsch aus...

These Nylon pinions were torn. Maybe in this case it would have been possible to buy replacements. However it could be solved faster and cheaper with bandages. Simply pressed on and that's it - and it even looks nice...

Bei der folgenden Gehäuseschale waren vier Messing-Gewindebuchsen in Kunststoffzapfen eingegossen. Die Kunststoffzapfen waren gerissen und die Gewindebuchsen damit locker. Ein forscher Bastler hatte sie daher mit Kunstharzmasse neu eingeklebt - mit dem Ergebnis, dass das Gehäuse nicht mehr schloss. Ich habe das Harz entfernt und die Kunststoffnippel mit dünnen Messingringen bandagiert - diesmal mit Epoxid verklebt, damit sie "Bodenhaftung" haben.

In the following case four brass screw collars were cast in plastic studs. The plastic studs were torn and the screw collars came loose. A brisk tinker wrapped them in resin - with the result that the case did not close any more. I removed the resin and bandaged the studs with thin brass rings - this time additionally glueded with epoxy to get good contact with the case.
