American Organette from the 1880's

Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich auf einem Flohmarkt in Südfrankreich einen Karton mit Teilen eines alten Musikgerätes gekauft.

Da gab es diese Grundplatte mit der Kurbel und dem darunter liegenden Blasebalg.

 

Some years ago on a flea market in southern France I bought a cardbord box with parts of an old music machine. There was this base with a crank handle and the bellows below. 

 

 

In der Mitte über dem Schlitz sass das folgende Tonerzeugungsteil mit der Andruckrolle. Hinter den 14 Löchern befinden sich 14 Stimmzungen (englisch: reeds) wie man sie in einer Mundharmonika oder auch in einem Akkordeon findet. 

In the middle across the slot the tone unit with the pinch roller was located. Behind the 14 holes there are 14 reeds like those you find in a harp or an accordion.

 

 

Der Blasebalg besteht aus zwei Teilen, die durch die Hebel abwechselnd betätigt werden und so kontinuierlich Luft durch die Stimmzungen saugen.

The bellows consists of two parts which are operated in turns thus sucking continously air through the reeds.

 

 

Mit dabei waren ebenfalls zwei "Tonbänder" mit je einem Musikstück

Die Grundplatte war auf einen Rahmen geschraubt, von dem aber nur noch drei Seiten und eine Ecke vorhanden waren.

The base plate had been mounted to a frame of which fortunately three sides and one leg were preserved.

 

 

Auf dem Blasebalg klebte eine Anleitung, die einen Hinweis auf Art und Herkunft dieses Geräts gibt: Es handelt sich um eine Organette der englischen Firma Louis H. Hart in London. Die Aufschrift auf dem Tonerzeugungsteil legt die Vermutung nahe, dass es sich um eine "American Organette" handelt.

An instruction was sticking on the bellows case giving a hint to type and origin of the device: it was an Organette of the english Company Louis H. Hart in London. The inscription on the tone unit suggests that it is an "American Organette".

 

 

Im Internet fand ich eine englische Zeitungsseite vom 10. Dezember 1881, auf der für diese Art von Musikinstrument geworben wird.

On the Internet I found a page of an english jounal dated 10th of december 1881, advertizing this kind of instrument.

 

 

Die Seite eines amerikanischen Auktionshauses zeigt den Verkauf eines sehr ähnlichen Gerätes im Jahr 2009:

Interessanterweise trägt es dieselben goldenen Verzierungsmuster wie meine "Ruine". 

Interesting enough it carries the same golden ornaments as my "ruin".

 

Ausserdem fand ich im Internet einen siebenseitigen amerikanischen "Catalog of Music" für diese Art von 14-reed Instruments aus dem Januar 1885. Der Preis der Musikbänder richtet sich nach ihrer Länge und wird in "Cents per foot" angegeben. 

Also on internet I found a seven-sided american "Catalog of Music" for this kind of 14-reed instrument form january 1885. The music tapes were priced according to length and given in "Cents per foot".

 

 

Das waren die Musik-Konserven des 19ten Jahrhundert. Es gab ja noch keinen Rundfunk und keine Schallplatte.

This was the canned Music of the 19th century. Broadcast and music records were not yet available.

 

  

Zur Vorbereitung der Restauration hatte ich mich schon einmal mit dem Restaurator eines Musikautomatenmuseums unterhalten und von ihm wertvolle Tipps bekommen. So zum Beispiel, dass das Gummituch des Blasebalgs ersetzt werden muss, ebenso wie die Lederdichtungen der Ventile und der Gummibelag der Transportwelle.

Auch einen Abschnitt Gummituch hatte ich mir schon besorgt.

As preparation to the restoration I had visited the restaurator of a museum for music automata who had given me valuable tips. For example he told me that the rubber cloth of the bellows had to be replaced as well as the leather seals of the valves and the rubber coating of the transport shaft.

He also gave me a sample of the required rubber cloth.

 

Aber jetzt habe ich endlich mit der schrittweisen Restauration begonnen. Erster Schritt: Rekonstruktion des Rahmens.

Hier die noch vorhandenen Teile und das Rohmaterial für die Ersatzteile.

So now finally I started with the piecewise restauration. First step: reconstruction of the frame. Here are the  parts still existing and the raw material for the spare parts.

  

Hier nun die vier fertigen Füsse nach ihrer Lackierung.

Im nächsten Bild sieht man die neue Seitenwand vor dem Aufbringen des Ornaments.
The next picture shows the new side before applying the ornament.

Den richtigen Farbton zu treffen erwies sich als schwieriger als gedacht.
To meet the right colour turned out to be more difficult than I had expected. 

 

Zunächst habe ich versucht, die Farbe durch Mischen verschiedener Holzbeizen zu treffen, aber das führte trotz zahlreicher Vorversuche nicht zum Ziel. Das Holz wird durch die Beize zunächst nass, dann ist der Farbton dunkel, wenn die Beize getrocknet ist, ist er wieder  deutlich heller, wenn das Holz dann lackiert wird, wird der Ton wieder dunkler, aber anders dunkel als mit nasser Beize - das alles ist auch noch vom Holz abhängig und in den dunklen und hellen Jahresringen auch noch verschieden. Das Endergebnis sieht man erst, wenn die Lackschicht aufgebracht ist, und wenn dann der Ton zu dunkel ist, kann man nichts mehr ändern.
At first I tried to meet it by mixing different wood stain colours. However this was not successful. When the wood gets wet by the stain, the tone is dark. When it dries, the tone is lighter again and when it is varnished, it gets darker again, but different dark as in the wetted state. In Addition all this depends on the type of wood and is different in the different tree-rings. The final result cannot be seen but at the end, and then nothing can be changed any more.

 

Wenn der Farbton dagegen zu hell ist, kann man dem Klarlack tupferweise braune und schwarze Farbe zugeben und so die Farbe insgesamt recht genau treffen. Und der Farbton ändert sich dann auch nicht mehr - WYSIWYG sozusagen. Man muss also etwas zu hell beizen und den Feinabgleich der Farbe dann mit dem Lack machen.
If the tone however is too light, it is possible to add brushwise brown and black colour to the clear varnish thus meeting the colour rather prcisely. And then the tone does not change any more - WYSIWYG so to speak. So the trick is to tint the wood a little bit too light and then fine-tuning the colour by pigmenting the clear varnish.
 

Wenn man sich die alten Seitenteile genauer anschaut, stellt man fest, dass bei der Herstellung wahrscheinlich auch schon so gearbeitet wurde.
Looking closely at the old sides I have the impression that probably that was the way how it was produced.

 

 

Jetzt wird die Oberfläche noch einmal fein angeschliffen und dann das Ornament kopiert und aufgemalt.

Now the surface will be sanded slightly to prepare it for copying and painting the ornament.

 

 

Anschliessend kann der Rahmen verleimt und anschliessend alles noch einmal mit Klarlack lackiert werden.

Und dann geht es an den Blasebalg.

Afterwards the frame can be glued together again and finally treated with clear varnish.
