Um diesen Brenner wieder fit zu machen, musste ich mich also um die Pumpkolbendichtung, die Brennerdüse und das Rückschlagventil kümmern.
To make this burner fit again, I had to care for the pump piston leather washer, the burner jet nipple and the no-return valve of the pump.
Die Pumpkolbendichtung war ausgefranst. Mit der konnte man keinen Druck mehr aufbauen.
The pump Piston leather washer was scraggy. Impossible to build up pressure with that seal.
Sie ist aus Leder und man kann sie aus Lederresten leicht selbst herstellen. Um das geeignete Leder zu finden, waren ein paar Versuche nötig.
It is made of leather and can easily be made of scrap leather. However, to find the right type and thickness of leather, some experiments werde needed.

Punching leather discs with a hollow punch works very well on a piece of end-grain wood.
Dann braucht man noch eine Form, in die das angefeuchtete Leder eingepresst wird, damit es die erforderliche Tassenform bekommt.

Wenn die Dichtung trocken ist, wird sie gut eingeölt und wieder auf den Pumpkolben montiert.
When the cup is dry, it is soaked in oil and remounted onto the piston.
Die Brennerdüse war nicht ganz dicht. Im Betrieb kamen zum Gewinde kleine gelbe Flämmchen heraus. Um die Brennerdüse zu entfernen, braucht man aber einen Spezialschlüssel mit Kardangelenk - keine Chance mit Zange oder Schraubenschlüssel. Den Spezialschlüssel kann man kaufen - oder man macht in selbst, das macht mehr Spass.
The burner jet nipple was not screwed tight enough into the burner. During operation there were little yellow flames emerging from the niplle thread. To remove - or to fasten - the nipple, a special articulated wrench is needed - no chance with pliers or ordinary wrench. This special wrench can be baught - or self made, which is more fun. Actually it's a kind of a challenge to make it.
Ganz tief unten im Pumpkolben sitzt ein Rückschlagventil, das bei alten Geräten wie diesem manchmal verklebt ist. Zum Herausschrauben dieses Ventils braucht man auch wieder einen Spezialschlüssel, der aber einfach herzustellen ist.
Deep down at the bottom of the pump cylinder there is a no-return valve (NRV). To remove and clean it needs - yes, again a special wrench. But this one is much easier to make.
Die Weissblechkiste wurde gründlich entrostet und anschliessend gewachst.
The tin plate box was thoroughly cleaned from rust and dirt and treated with antique wax afterwards.
Im Deckel befand sich eine Packanleitung, die fast zerbröselt war.
In the lid there was a packing instruction which was stained from rust and very fragile.
Ohne diese Packanleitung hat man am Anfang echt Mühe, die Teile in der Blechkiste zu verstauen. Es gibt exakt EINE Anordnung der Teile, bei der es passt.
Without this packing instruction it was Kind of difficult at the beginning, to stow all parts in the box. There is exactly ONE arrangement and orientation which makes all parts fit into the box.

Die Gewinde zwischen Brennerdüse und Brenner und zwischen Brenner und Tank müssen luftdicht sein. Anfang hatte ich damit Probleme. Dann habe ich sie mit temperaturfester Kupferpaste (wie man sie beim Auto verwendet) eingerieben, und danach war alles dicht und der Kocher brannte vorschriftsmässig und ohne Russentwicklung und Gestank.
The threaded joints between the burner nipple and the burner and between the burner stub and the tank have to be airtight. At first I had some problems with that. But then I applied temperature resistant copper paste (like the one for cars) and afterwards everything was tight and the burner worked nicely without producing soot and smell.
