Heute rief mich unser Schrotthändler an und sagte, er hätte vielleicht was für mich, ich sollte es mir doch mal ansehen.
Ich hatte ihm erzählt, dass ich für unser Esszimmer vielleicht eine alte mechanische Stempeluhr vom Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts suche.
Und so eine zeigte er mir.
Today our scrap dealer called me and said he had something for me, I should come and have a look.
I had told him that I was perhaps looking for an old mechanical attendance clock from the beginning of the last century.
And that's what he showed me.

Aber so gross hatte ich mir die nicht vorgestellt.
Die passt nicht in unsere Wohnung.
Aber ich überlege es mir noch. Er verwahrt sie erst einmal.

Ich fragte dann noch nach Kupferlackdraht für den Majestic G-5 Speaker.
Wir sind dann in sein Lager gefahren.
Und siehe da: was finden wir?

So we drove to his storehouse.
And behold: what did we find?
Jaa, auch drei Rollen Kupferlackdraht, aber leider hat nur die Kleine den richtigen Drahtdurchmesser, das ist immer noch nicht genug.
Yeees, three coils of enameled copper wire too, but unfortunately only the little one had the right diameter, and that still is not enough.

Aber die drei Spulen daneben, die mit dem rosa Draht, DIE sind interessant!
Das ist Hochfrequenzlitze.
But the three coils next to them, those with the pink wire on it, THEY are interesting!
That is stranded copper wire for high frequency applications.
Das ist nämlich so: Bei hohen Frequenzen wird der Strom von seinem eigenen Magnetfeld aus dem Inneren des Leiters in eine dünne Schicht an seiner Oberfläche verdrängt. Skin-Effekt nennt man das.
Würde man also für Hochfrequenzströme einen einfachen dicken runden Draht nehmen, dann wäre der grösste Teil seines Querschnitts für den Stromfluss vergeudet, weil da sowieso nichts durchfliesst. Ausserdem hätte dieser Draht dann für den Hochfrequenzstrom einen sehr grossen. Widerstand, und das will man vermeiden. Deshalb macht man die Oberfläche des Drahts künstlich grösser, indem man ihn aus sehr vielen ganz dünnen Einzeldrähten zusammensetzt. Einen Draht aus Einzeldrähten nennt man eine Litze. Der auf der linken Spule hat z.B. 45 Einzeldrähte mit einem Durchmesser von je 0,07mm.
Die rosa Isolation ist aus Seide.
And this is the story behind it: At high frequencies the electric current is pushed by it's own magnetic field from the inside of a wire to a thin layer close to its surface. This is called Skin Effect.
If one would take a single thick copper wire for high frequency currents, the major part of it's cross section would be wasted because there is no current flowing anyway. Furthermore this wire would have a very high resistance for the high frequency current, and this is what you want to avoid.
Therefore the surface of the wire is artificially augmented by composing it of very many very thin individual wires. A conductor composed of several induvidual wires ist called a stranded wire.
The stranded high frequency wire on the left coil for example comprises 45 individual wires of diameter 0,07mm each.
The pink isolation is made of silk.
Ich wollte immer mal eine alte Rahmenantenne nachbauen. Dafür braucht man diesen Draht, und der ist heute nicht mehr einfach zu bekommen.
I always wanted to rebuild an old type of frame antenna. For that I would need this wire and it is not easy to find any more.
Deshalb hab ich ihn mitgenommen.

Aber nicht nur das, sondern auch das: verzinnter Kupferdraht.
Ich habe allerdings keine Ahnung, wofür man den verwendet hat, aber vielleicht finde ich das heraus.

Für den Schrotthändler haben diese Sachen nur den kg-Wert des Kupfers, und wenn Isolation darum herum ist, ist der Wert nochmal niedriger.
Wenn man diese Waren aber im Geschäft neu kauft - und das sind genau die gleichen - zahlt man das 5- bis 10-fache.
For the scrap dealer these things only have the per-kio value of copper, and if the wire is isolated, the value is still lower.
However if you by these goods in a shop - and they are identical - you pay it 5- to 10-fold.
Das ist natürlich viel mehr als ich in meinem Leben verbrauchen kann, aber ich konnte ja schliesslich nicht vor Ort beginnen, da etwas abzuwickeln. Also schaue ich mal, was ich damit mache. Als Schrott zurückgeben kann ich sie immer noch.
Of course this is much more than I need in my hole life, but after all I couldn't start to unwind coils on site. So I'll see, what I'm going to do with it. Giving it back to the scrapyard is always an option.
In derselben Kiste lag übrigens auch noch dieses Gerät.
