Philips Nanette

Vor einiger Zeit bekam ich ein kleines defektes Transistorradio. Es war eine Philips Nanette L1W22T/64 aus dem Jahr 1964.

Some time ago I received a small defect transistor radio.
It was a Philips Nanette L1W22T/64 of the year 1964.

Das war damals eins der ersten und kleinsten Taschenradios - ein Fortschritt, der durch die Transistortechnik möglich wurde.

Es ist nur 100mm x 80mm x 30mm gross.

Das war für damalige Verhältnisse sensationell klein.

Es läuft mit einer einzigen 9V-Batterie und empfängt Sender auf Langwelle, Mittelwelle und UKW. Für diese Funktionen hatte man bislang grosse röhrenbestückte Kisten benötigt.
At that time it was one of the earliest and smallest pocket radios - a real progress which was made possible by transistor technology.
It measures only 100mm x 80mm x 30mm.
Compared to former conditions this was sensationally small.
It works with a single 9V battery and receives stations in the long and medium wave range and on VHF.

Die Reparatur war wesentlich aufwändiger als ich gedacht hatte, da das Gerät stark "verbastelt" war. Zunächst sah es nicht so so kompliziert aus. Da war ein offensichtlich zu grosses Loch im Gehäuse...

The repair was much more intricate than I had thought because of former and failed attempts to repair it. At first glance it didn't look too complicated. There was an obviously too big hole in the case...

...und auf der Platine waren Leiterbahnen abgegangen und durch Kabel ersetzt worden. Mit fortschreitender Analyse kam dann aber Eins zum Anderen.

...and on the circuit board tracks had gone and had been replaced by cables. With progressing analysis however one defect added to the other.

Es begann damit, dass der Ein-Aus-Schalter nicht funktionierte,

weil sich die Leiterbahnen auf der Schalterplatte gelöst hatten.
It began with the On-Off-switch that didn't work because conducting tracks on the switch had gone

Er war ausserdem mit einer Harzmasse umhüllt. Ein Vergleich mit Fotos intakter Geräte zeigte, dass er aufgrund dieser Verklebung nicht mehr an der richtigen Stelle sass, und weil seine Position nicht mehr zu dem eigentlich für ihn vorgesehenen Loch im Gehäuse passte, hatte jemand kurzerhand das Loch im Gehäuse vergrössert - daher die gähnende Öffnung in der Seite.
The switch also was wrapped in resin. A comparison with photos of unspoiled devices showed me that due to this bonded joint the switch was no longer in the position where it should be. And because it's position didn't fit any more to the opening in the case someone quickly enlarged the hole in the case - producing this gaping opening in it's side.

Es half also nichts. Der Schalter musste repariert werden.

Nach Entfernen des Harzes konnte man die ursprüngliche Form und Dimension erkennen, ...
So there was no way around. The switch had to be repaired.
After removing the resin it was possible to recognize it's original form and dimensions...

So weit, so gut.
So far, so good.

Als ich nun die Platine wieder ins Gehäuse montieren wollte, um zu sehen, wo genau der Schalter in der grossen Öffnung sass, stellte ich fest, dass sich das Gehäuse nicht richtig schliessen liess.
However when I wanted to remount the radio pcb into the case in order to precisely locate the switch position within the gaping hole in the case, I found that the case could not be closed properly.

Nach einigem Rätselraten fiel mir auf, dass die beiden unteren Gewindehülsen im Gehäuse, auf denen die Platine befestigt wurde, um gut einen Millimeter höher waren als die anderen beiden.
Einer der Vorbesitzer hatte sie offenbar mit Harz fixiert und dabei nicht auf ihre Höhe geachtet.
After some guesswork I found out that the bottom two threaded studs on which the radio-pcb was mounted, were more than a millimeter higher than the other two. One of the previous owners obviously had fixed them with resin without taking care of their hight.

Nachdem ich das Harz weggefräst hatte, wurde ersichtlich, dass der Kunststoff um die Gewindehülsen gerissen war.
After removind the resin, it became obvious that the plastic studs were torn.

Ich habe daher um alle vier Gewindezapfen ein dünnes Messingrohr als Bandage mit Epoxidharz angebracht.
I therefore bandaged all four studs with thin brass tubes glued with epoxy resin.

Als Nächstes habe ich mir die Schaltung selbst vorgenommen.
In the next step I went for the radio circiut itself.

Die Seite mit den Leiterbahnen war in schlechtem Zustand. Einige waren schon abgefallen, andere waren locker und hoben sich beim Ein- und Auslöten von Bauteilen ab. 
The copper side of the pcb was in a very bad condition. Some tracks were completely gone, others came loose when soldering or unsoldering components.

In mühsamer Kleinarbeit habe ich sie durch dünne Drähte oder isolierte Litzen nachgebildet und die in der Luft hängenden Beine einiger Bauteile befestigt:
In tedious detail work I replaced all loose tracks with thin copper wires or isolated strand and fixed component ends formerly dangling in the air.

Ausser einem Transistor und zwei Elektrolytkondensatoren waren auch zwei der winzigen HF-Filter defekt. Die Spulen hatten keinen Durchgang mehr, weil offensichtlich Anschlüsse aus ihrer Grundplatte ausgebrochen und die hauchdünnen Drähte abgerissen waren.
Besides a transistor and two electrolytic capacitors also two of the tiny bandfilters were defect. Their contact pins were broken out of their ground plate thus tearing off the very thin wires of their coils.

Das war heikel, weil für Filter anderer Abmessung praktisch kein 

Platz war und auch die Lötanschlüsse genau passen mussten.
This was tricky because there was no spare place for filters of different dimensions, and besides the soldering pins had to fit.

Bei diesem UKW-Filter war die Grundplatte regelrecht zerbröselt: 
Of this VHF-filter the base plate was virtually crumbled:

Ich habe die Grundplatte mit einer sehr dünnen Pertinaxplatte verstärkt, die mit Epoxid aufgeklebt wurde und so auch den Anschlüssen  Halt gab. Die Bewicklung war kein Problem, weil wegen der hohen Frequenzen nur wenige Windungen HF-Litze nötig waren.
I reenforced the base plate by glueing a very thin Pertinax plate onto it with epoxy resin. This also gave hold to the contact pins.

Der zweite defekte Bandfilter - einer für den AM-Bereich - war noch problematischer. Die Spule in einem Ferritkern war noch kleiner und musste mit in Summe fast 300 Windungen bewickelt werden.

Drahtdurchmesser 0,07mm. Das wollte ich nicht von Hand wickeln. Daher brauchte ich auch noch eine Aufspannvorrichtung für diesen Mini-Spulenkörper.Aber irgendwie ging es dann doch.

The second defective bandfilter - it was one for the AM part - was even more tricky to repair. The coil in a ferrite core was even smaller and had to carry about 300 windings of enameled copper wire of 0,07mm diameter. I did not want to wind this manually. Therefore I had to make me a chuck for this tiny coil-body.
But somehow it worked.

Here is now the component side of the pcb after all repair steps have been carried out. The red arrows point to the repaired bandfilters.

Die grünen Pfeile zeigen auf die Luftspulen des UKW-Hochfrequenzschwingkreises und des UKW-Oszillatorschwingkreises. Ihre Induktivitäten und Kopplungsfaktoren werden durch Auseinanderziehen oder Zusammenschieben der Windungen abgeglichen - ein mühsamer Prozess, der viel Fingerspitzengefühl erfordert.
The green arrows point to the air-core-coils of the VHF tuned circuit and the VHF oscillator circuit.
Their inductances and coupling factors are adjusted by extending or compressing their windings - a cumbersome process which requires some intuition.

Bemerkenswert ist auch, dass hier die UKW-Teile unabgeschirmt im Gehäuse liegen. In anderen UKW-Empfängern sind sie in ein Metallgehäuse eingebaut. Die nicht vorhandene Abschirmung hat zur Folge, dass z.B. die Hand, die das Gerät hält, Einfluss auf die Abstimmung hat.
It is also remarkable that the VHF components are more or less unshielded in the case. In other VHF tuners they are completely enclosed in a metal box. The missing shield in this device has the effect that e.g. the hand holding the device influences the tuning.

Jetzt fehlten nur noch zwei Schönheitsoperationen: Das Schliessen des Lochs im Gehäuse und die Antennenspitze.
Now only two aesthetic changes were missing: The closing of the hole in the case and the tip of the antenna.

Offenbar war das oberste Glied der Teleskopantenne abgebrochen. Um die Bruchstelle zu glätten und zu fixieren hatte man einen dicken Lötzinntropfen angebracht. 
Obviously the top element of the antenna had been torn off. To fix the crack it had been covered with a big blob of solder.

Das war für die Funktion zwar ausreichend aber unschön. Ich habe ihn entfernt und durch eine Messingperle ersetzt.

While this was sufficient for the function it was unaesthetic. I replaced the blob with a perl of brass.

Der Einsatz für das Loch konnte nun ausgemessen und gefräst werden. Zum Glück hatte ich ein Stück Plastik in einer ähnlichen schmutzig-beigen Farbe in meiner Materialkiste.

The insert for the hole in the case now could be sized and milled.

By chance I had a similarly coloured piece of plastic in my material stock.

Und so war das Pocket-Radio Philips Nanette von 1962 endlich wieder zum Leben erweckt. Hier von vorn...

Der Mini-Lautsprecher ist auch etwas Besonderes: 

Er hat einen Nenn-Scheinwiderstand von 100 Ohm.

Wenn der defekt wäre, hätte man ein Problem: Ersatzbeschaffung dürfte schwer bis unmöglich sein und für einen Ausgangsübertrager, den man brauchte um einen handelüblichen 8-Ohm-Lautsprecher zu verwenden, fehlt der Platz.

The mini speaker also is a peculiarity:

It has a rated impedence of 100 Ohms.

If it were defect, this would be a problem: replacement would probably difficult to impossible and there would not be space in the case for an output transformer which would be necessary to use an off-the-shelf 8-Ohm-speaker.

Bandages for broken Plastic Parts

Bei der Restauration älterer Geräte stösst man mitunter auf kaputte Kunststoffteile. Durch Alterung oder einfach Überlastung können hochbelastete Stelle wie z.B. Lagerbüchsen einreissen.

When restoring old devices, you are occasionally confronted with broken plastic parts. Due to ageing or overstressing highly stressed regions like bushings can tear.

Wenn möglich, ersetze ich das ganze Kunststoffteil. Manchmal aber sind die Kunststoffteile so komplex geformt, dass ein Nachbau zu kompliziert ist. Wenn ein Ersatzteil nicht mehr erhältlich oder zu teuer ist, ist guter Rat teuer.

If possible, I usually replace the whole plastic part. Sometimes however these parts have such a complex form that it is too complicated to rebuild them. If spare parts are no longer available or too expensive, it's hard to know what to do.  

Oft ist es dann aber möglich, die belasteten Teile mit Metallteilen - ich verwende meist Messing - so zu bandagieren, dass sie wieder stabil sind und ein weiteres Einreissen vermieden wird.

Der Aufwand ist meist relativ gering.

Often however it is possible, to bandage the most stressed regions with metal parts - I usually use brass - in order to make them stable again and to prevent them from tearing further. The effort frquently is fairly small.

Wenn die Bandagen stramm passend gemacht werden, braucht man noch nicht mal Kleber.

If the bandages are made to fit snugly, not even glue is needed.

Diese Nylon-Ritzel waren gerissen. Man hätte sie vielleicht noch beschaffen können. Schneller und billiger ging es aber mittels Bandagen. Einfach aufgepresst und fertig - und es sieht auch noch hübsch aus...

These Nylon pinions were torn. Maybe in this case it would have been possible to buy replacements. However it could be solved faster and cheaper with bandages. Simply pressed on and that's it - and it even looks nice...

Bei der folgenden Gehäuseschale waren vier Messing-Gewindebuchsen in Kunststoffzapfen eingegossen. Die Kunststoffzapfen waren gerissen und die Gewindebuchsen damit locker. Ein forscher Bastler hatte sie daher mit Kunstharzmasse neu eingeklebt - mit dem Ergebnis, dass das Gehäuse nicht mehr schloss. Ich habe das Harz entfernt und die Kunststoffnippel mit dünnen Messingringen bandagiert - diesmal mit Epoxid verklebt, damit sie "Bodenhaftung" haben.

In the following case four brass screw collars were cast in plastic studs. The plastic studs were torn and the screw collars came loose. A brisk tinker wrapped them in resin - with the result that the case did not close any more. I removed the resin and bandaged the studs with thin brass rings - this time additionally glueded with epoxy to get good contact with the case.

Autophon Recordophon

Vor einiger Zeit auf dem Schrottplatz sah ich unter anderem Gerümpel eine Holzkiste.

Some time ago on the scrapyard I saw under a heap of rubbish a wooden box.

Als ich die Klappe öffnete, sah ich etwas etwas Spezielles.

When I opened the lid, I saw something special.

Nun, der Plattenteller mit dem Tonarm war es nicht der mein Interesse weckte. Rechts neben dem Tonarm aber fiel mir gleich der Teller für die Drahtspule auf.

Well, it was not the record tray and the pickup, that raised my interest. It was the tray of the wire bobin to the right of the pickup.

Es war ein Drahtrecorder kombiniert mit einem Grammophon - allerdings schon mit elektrodynamischem Tonabnehmer.

It was a wire recorder combined with a grammophone - already equipped with a electrodynamic pickup.

Es war ein "Recordophon" der Schweizer Firma Autophon.

It was a "Recordophon" of the Swiss company Autophone. 

Das Baujahr dürfte so um 1951 herum gelegen haben.

The year of manufacture must have been around 1951.

Zu dieser Zeit gab es mehrere Hersteller von Drahtrecordern. 

Sehr bekannt waren die Geräte der amerikanischen Firma Webster (die man auf manchen alten Filmaufnahmen der Nürnberger Prozesse sehen kann) und die deutsche Firma Schaub-Lorenz. Ein ganz spezieller, partabler Drahtrecorder war das Minifon der Hamburger Firma Protona, über das ich in einem anderen Post in Kürze berichten werde.

At that time several producers of wire recorders existed.

Well known were recorders of the American company Webster (which can be seen in some historical movies of the Nürnberg trials) and the German company Schaub-Lorenz. A very special portable wirerecorder was the Minifon of the Hamburg company Protona, about which I will report in one of the next posts.

Dieses historisch interessante Gerät war in einem bedauernswerten Zustand: 

Das Gehäuse war gebrochen und durchnässt, die Kabel der Elektronik von Tieren angefressen, der Plattentellerbezug zerrissen und die Mechanik ölverschmiert.

This historically interesting device war in a pitiable state: The cabinet was broken an wet, the cabling was partly torn and fretted, the cover of the record tray was torn and the mechanics was smudged with oil.  

Bei genauerer Prüfung zeigten sich noch zwei weitere, heikle Defekte.

More detailed investigation showed two more precarious defects.

Die sogenannte "Tänzer-Rolle" aus Hartgummi, die sich zwischen Antrieb und Plattenteller klemmt und diesen antreibt, war mehr fünfeckig als rund (siehe Pfeil im folgenden Bild).

Dadurch rumpelte der Plattenspieler wie ein Auto, dass durch Schlaglöcher fährt.

The so called dancer roll, made of hard rubber, which is clamped between the drive shaft and the record tray in order to drive the tray, was a pentagon rather than a circle.

Therefore the player rumbled like a car on a gravel road.

Ausserdem zeigten Widerstandsmessungen am Tonkopf des Drahtrecorders, dass die Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule defekt war.

Furthermore resistance measurements at the recording head of the wire recorder showed that die read-/write-coil was defekt. 

Uijuijui.

Einen Tonkopf hatte ich noch nie in meinem Leben geöffnet, geschweige denn repariert.

Ein Ersatz aus Altbeständen von Sammlern und Restaurateuren war auch nicht zu erwarten, da dieses Schweizer Recordophon relativ selten ist und einen rechteckigen Tonkopf besitzt, während die anderen, verbreiteteren Geräte von Webster und Schaub runde Tonköpfe hatten.

I never opened up a recording head in my life, nor did I reair one.

A substitute from old stock of collectors and restorers could not be expected since this Swiss Recordophon is relatively rare and has a square recording head whereas the other more widely spread machines of Webster and Schaub had round heads.

Also habe ich erstmal mit den einfacheren Sachen begonnen.

So for the time being I started with some simpler things.

Das Tänzerrad konnte ich ausbauen und den Gummibelag um ca 1mm abdrehen. Das ging auf der Drehbank erstaunlich gut.

 I removed the dancer roll and turned off 1mm on the lathe. This worked astonishingly well.

Auch der Plattentellerbelag liess sich entfernen und durch neuen Filz ersetzen. 

Also the cover of the record tray yould be removed and replaced by a new felt cover.

Die übrige Mechanik war schnell gereinigt und soweit unversehrt. Der Motor lief noch einwandfrei.

The rest of the mechanic was readily cleaned and intact. The motor still worked fine.

Von einem Sammlerkollegen bekam ich eine etwas verbogene Drahtspule, die ich richten konnte.

From a collector friend I received a slightly bent bobin with wire on it and could straighten it.

Damit war dieser Teil schon wieder funktionsfähig und präsentabel:

Dann habe ich mir die Elektronik  vorgenommen. 

Sie dient als Aufnahme-/Wiedergabeverstärker für den Drahtrecorder. Aufnahmen sind möglich von Mikrophon, Platte und Radio. Zur Wiedergabe von Platte oder Drahtrecorder wurde das Ausgangssignal des Verstärkers in den Grammophoneingang eines Radios gespeist.

Then I went for the electronics.

It has the function of a record/playback amplifier for the wire recorder. Recordings are possible from microphone, record and radio. For playback of records or wire recordings the output signal of the amplifier was fed into the pickup jack of a radio receiver.

Die Röhren waren glücklicherweise intakt, insbesondere die mittlerweile seltene und daher teure EM4, das magische Auge, mit dessen Hilfe man die Aufnahmen aussteuert.

The tubes fortunately were ok, especially the meanwhile rare and expensive EM4, the magic eye, which helps to control the recordings.

Ansonsten mussten Kondensatoren erneuert, abgerissene und angefressene Kabel geflickt und Rost entfernt werden - das Übliche halt.

Apart from that I had to renew capacitors, mend torn and animal-bitten cables and remove rust und dirt - the usual procedure. 

Nur testen konnte ich die Elektronik nur rudimentär, da der Tonkopf dabei eine zentrale Rolle spielt.

Also musste ich mich jetzt endlich an diese heikle Aufgabe machen.

Ich musste die Nieten entfernen um ihn zu öffnen.

However I could test the electronics only rudimentary, since the recording head plays a central role in the electronics.

So now I had to finally attack this delicate work.

I had to remove the rivets to open it.

Die Spulen auf dem Eisenkern im Inneren waren leider mit Kunstharz vergossen, der auf dem Bild schon teilweise entfernt ist.

Ich hatte die schwache Hoffnung, dass der dünne Draht der Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule vielleicht nur am äusseren Ende abgerissen sein könnte, und habe daher eine Weile an dem Kunstharz herumgekratzt und das Ende gesucht. 

Es war aber hoffnungslos.

The coils on the iron core unfortunately were molded in resin, which is already partly removed on the foto.
I had the week hope that the thin wire of the record/playback-coil might only be torn at its outer end. Therefore I scratched a while in the resin searching for the loose end.

But it was hopeless.

Also gab es nur eine Möglichkeit, den Tonkopf zu retten: 

Die Spulen mussten so vorsichtig zerstückelt werden, dass man die Drahtstärke und die Zahl der Windungen ermitteln konnte, denn diese Produktionsdetails sind heute nicht mehr verfügbar.

So there was only one possibility to save the recording head: I had to fragment them carefully so that I could retain the diameter of the wire and the number of turns, because these production details were no longer available.

Das gelang einigermassen. Insbesondere wurde damit klar, dass ich auf den winzigen Spulenkörper der Aufnahme-/Wiedergabespule ca 2000 Windungen Kupferlackdraht mit einem Durchmesser von 0,1mm würde aufbringen müssen.

This worked fairly well. In particular it became clear that I would have to wind 2000 turns of 0,1mm enameled copper wire onto this tiny coil body.

Ausserdem wollte ich die Spulenkörper erhalten, denn die sind so klein, dass ich sie nicht selbst herstellen konnte. Die Löcher darin sind rechteckig und haben die Masse 0,8mm x 3,5mm. Das sind natürlich immer noch riesige Dimensionen verglichen mit der Grösse des Tonkopfes moderner Kassettenrecorder, aber wie dem auch sei, ich hatte keine Idee, wie ich sie hätte herstellen können.

Furthermore I wanted to preserve the coil bodies because they were so small that I would not be able to remake them in my shop.

The holes in them were square and had the dimensions 0,8mm x 3,5mm. Of course this is still huge compared to recording heads of modern cassette recorders, but anyhow, I did'nt have an idea how to make them. 

Schliesslich hatte ich die Spulen freigelegt und konnte sie vom Eisenkern abziehen.

Sie waren aber jetzt ziemlich ramponiert.

Finally I excavated the coils and could pull them off the iron core.

But now they were fairly battered.

Zumindest den grossen Spulenkörper musste ich wieder instandsetzen.

Mit 0,8mm dünnem Pertinax und Epoxidkleber gelang das erstaunlich gut.

At least the larger coil body hat to be restored. Using 0,8mm Pertinax and epoxy resin this worked astonishingly well.

Nun musste ich noch eine Halterung für diesen Spulenkörper bauen, damit ich ihn zum Wickeln der 2000 Windungen auf der Drehbank spannen  konnte:

Now I had to build a mount for this body, so that I could clamp it on the lathe for winding the 2000 turns.

Aber dann ging alles ganz schnell und leicht.

But then everything went fast and easy.

Die Spulen wurden gewickelt, montiert und verdrahtet:

Vorsichtshalber habe ich den Tonkopf mit Schrauben verschlossen und NICHT vergossen.

As a precaution I locked the head with screws instead of rivets and I did NOT seal it.

Damit konnte ich den Drahtrecorder testen und in Betrieb nehmen, aber das wird Gegenstand des nächsten Post sein.

So now I could test the wire recorder and put it in operation.
